If you’ve been around for a while, you know that I absolutely love and adore electuaries. They’re my favorite herbal preparation and I especially love making seasonal electuaries (the violet electuary for example).
After a long night with my type 1 kiddo, I was really dragging this morning. Caffeine has always been my vice since I started having kids. Now I have 7 sweet kiddos in my life and it can be a lot sometimes. While I have no intentions of doing away with my coffee because it makes me happy, sometimes you need an extra pick me up. For me it’s really helpful after a long sleepless night and I want to do something strenuous, like workout or go on a hike.
So, meet my newest favorite remedy 😂 I had the raw honey out because of some scary lows with my kiddo at the start of the night. Which then led to a yo-yo of a night (mamas of type 1 kiddos you know what I mean 😵💫).
Honey is a great carb. As we know carbs are literal fuel for our bodies. This macronutrient gets a lot of bad press though and is misunderstood.
When we crave carbs often times it’s because in some way or another we have a decline in serotonin and dopamine. Stress, lack of sleep, deficiencies like B12 or iron. Carbs help to replenish serotonin and dopamine but processed carbs can spike blood sugar and cause mood swings. Whole food carbs help with thyroid hormone function calming the nervous system and modulating cortisol levels.
A lot of folks have gone to the extreme to banish carbs from their diets, but like I mentioned before I’m not keen on restrictive lifestyles. Carbs are important. Do they need to be at the bottom if the food pyramid taking up most of our diet or highly processed? No. But they should exist in our meals. It is literally our bodies primary energy source. Root vegetables and grains have been apart of the human diet for millennia.
When we consume raw honey those monosaccharides are quickly absorbed into the blood stream and act as a fast acting energy source. Thats just the honey alone! For this electuary I’ve included raw Cacao, Jasmine Green Tea, Rhodiola, Cayenne and Ceylon Cinnamon. I LOVE how this blend turned out and what it does for my body.
This electuary is one that will definitely be added to the line up permanently. Let’s meet the plants!
🌱 Cacao- chocolate in its purest form. Cacao is a gentle stimulant thanks to its theobromine, it helps increase blood flow and boosts endurance, helps with oxygenation. Its fantastic source of magnesium, zinc and iron (remember the fatigue that can be caused by these deficiencies and women in menstruation are even more prone to these deficiencies). All of these micronutrients are incredibly important to regulating muscle function, tissue repair, reducing cramping, and improving endurance. It’s loaded with antioxidants which of course help combat oxidative stress. Studies even show that the flavanols in cacao increase fat oxidation.
🌱Jasmine Green Tea- this is one of my favorite teas and how it’s made is fascinating. Jasmine is my favorite aromatic ever, however the scent disappears once the flowers are dried. The green tea captures the beautiful aromatics and flavors because the fresh flowers are placed in front of a fan and allowed to infuse into the green tea leaves. Fascinating! And so so good! Obviously green tea is a great caffeine source. It’s proven to boost the metabolism, increase fat oxidation and aid in recovery as well as suppressing chronic inflammatory responses. The Jasmine offers a gentle floral taste with the added benefits of aiding with better focus and metabolic health.
🌱Rhodiola- My FAVORITE plant ally for physical health. Rhodiola is an artic plant and our climate would treat it well. It’s one I’ll be adding a large crop of to the garden this year. For now, Ive sourced Alaskan Rhodiola. It’s incredibly fast acting and the ultimate herb in my opinion for energy and focus. There are studies showing the role it plays in ATP production (adenosine triphosphate). ATP is sometimes referred to as energy currency for our cells and it vital for protein synthesis, muscle contractions, nerve impulses and so much more.
🌱Cayenne- a touch of cayenne to turn up the heat! Getting the blood flowing it’s important and it’s great metabolism support. Ive found that my endurance levels increase drastically when I utilize this spicy herb
🌱Cinnamon- such a simple, common but overlooked herb. I love Ceylon cinnamon and it plays a wonderful role in aiding with steady blood sugar (for non type 1 folks obviously- I hate when folks suggest cinnamon for my insulin dependent son 😬😅). It’s also shown to aid with macro utilization (think carbs, protein ect)
And finally a touch of Celtic salt 🤍
